World War 1 part 1/7

This week’s challenge is learning more about WW1.  The Great War.  I think it’s a topic everyone in my generation should spend some time studying.  If only as an act of respect towards the people involved. Also because there was so much that happened there, history, advancements, things that still wildly effect the way the world is today…

So I’ll start with a timeline.

“On 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austriaheir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were shot dead in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, one of a group of six assassins (five Serbs and one Bosniak) coordinated by Danilo Ilić, a Bosnian Serb and a member of the Black Hand secret society.”

Seriously I understood about 1 percent of that sentence.  To translate:

An archduke is the son of the emperor.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand is this guy:

That’s him there with his wife Sophia.  Great love story there by the way.  They met at a ball and he insisted on marrying her even though she was ‘lower class’ and it took much to even have it okay’d.  They both went through through so much just to be together.

Anywho Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated in the second of that day’s attempt on their lives.  They were in Sarejevo which is part of Bosnia.

They were shot by Gavrilo Princip who was a member of the black hand.  From what I understand that was a group originally meaning to unite territories under Serbia gone way wrong.

That was June 28th 1914.

Then the July Crises occurred which started with Austria-Hungary giving Serbia an ultimatum basically coercing it into not trying to control the north.  The expected conclusion was that Serbia would agree and solve the issue diplomatically or a localized war would follow.

Serbia obviously didn’t agree and when Austria-Hungary declared war what they got was not a localized war but World War 1.

Some letters were supposed to be delivered to some higher ups in Germany from Austria-Hungary trying to find out what Germany would do if Austria-Hungary needed an ali.  Here’s the summary of the letters according to Wiki:

Berchtold previously had decided to seek a more direct statement of German intentions. On 24 June, Austria-Hungary had prepared a letter for its ally outlining the challenges in the Balkans and how to address them, but Franz Ferdinand was assassinated before it could be delivered.[24] According to the letter, Romania was no longer a reliable ally especially since the Russo-Romanian summit meeting of 14 June in Constanța. Russia was working toward an alliance of Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, and Montenegro against Austria-Hungary, dismemberment of Austria-Hungary, and the movement of borders from east to west. To break up this effort, Germany and Austria-Hungary should first ally with Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire. To this letter was added a post-script on the Sarajevo Outrage and its impact. Finally, Emperor Franz Joseph added his own letter to Emperor Wilhelm II which closed with advocating the end of Serbia as a political power factor.[25] Hoyos was dispatched to Germany to present these letters.

Berchtold was the foreign minister (a countries person who deals with foreign affairs) for Germany.

The Balkans are the Balkan States;  Balkan States. plural noun. 1. the countries in the Balkan Peninsula: Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, and the European part of Turkey.

Hoyos was Alexander Graf von Hoyos.  Okay I thought that was a country or something.  My bad Count Hoyos.

So they delivered the letters on July 5th (talk about snail mail) and got the agreement that Germany was on their side on July 6th.

The debate went on and on holy cow.  Russia advised Serbia to agree to the ultimatum because Russia was not ready for war with either Germany or Austria-Hungary.  Serbia tried to agree except for one point (Austria having it’s own officers on the ground there).  Britain tried to mediate to stop the chances of either a general or world war.  Nobody agreed on anything and I lost count of the lying, trickery, backstabbing, shit talking acts from one person to another going on in all these countries that added up to lack of communication and in the end failure to avoid the war.

Since it was obvious Austria was going to declare war on Serbia, Germany made steps to prepare taking down ali’s of Serbia as well.  This included the Triple Entente.

Wiki says:
The Triple Entente (from French entente[ɑ̃tɑ̃t] “friendship, understanding, agreement”) was the alliance linking theRussian Empire, the French Third Republic, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland after the signing of the Anglo-Russian Entente on 31 August 1907. The alliance of the three powers, supplemented by agreements with Portugal and Japan, constituted a powerful counterweight to the Triple Alliance of GermanyAustria-Hungary and the Kingdom of Italy.

Okay my brain is full.
